Listening to great calls in the career of Hall of Famer Bob Murphy on WFAN today. Murph died of lung cancer today at age 79, less than a year after retiring after a 42-year career as the voice of the Mets. I loved his voice - a sunny and smooth Oklahoma drawl. To me, his was the voice of summer, or warm days outside with the radio on, and that voice was a constant in my life (which began the same year as the Mets). He had a way with certain names through the years - Cleon Joooooones, Buddy (never Bud) Harrelson, Dave "Sky" Kingman, Ronnie Gardehiiiiire, De-wight Gooden, Willie Montanez, Jesse Orosco, just to name a view. Met him a few times, around the Diamond Club at Shea - a true gentleman, always time for a word with the fans. Truly the end of an era.
